The best memory palace app depends on what you want to remember: memoryOS, Mnemorium and Sherlock's Memory Palace are built to learn and train, and Anki adds spaced repetition. Below is an honest comparison of seven apps, with the price as each maker states it, the platforms and who each one suits.

Where is The Memory Palace? Not in this table, because it is a different category. The Memory Palace is not a memory trainer and does not help you memorise anything: it is your own private 3D palace for your own memories, where your photos, recordings and stories each get a room you can walk through, and family and friends come in by invitation. The free memory palace generator on this site is a separate tool for the classic technique. Have a look at the app.

The apps one by one

memoryOS

memoryOS, from Encoder Inc., turns the memory palace method into a game. It was co-created by Jonas von Essen, a two-time World Memory Champion, and offers short lessons, ready-made 3D mind palaces where you place what you want to remember along a path, and spaced repetition. It runs on iPhone and iPad, Android and the web. The app is free to download; the US App Store lists plans such as Student at $5.99 a month, Essential at $89.99 a year and Expert at up to $174.99 a year. Suits people who want to be taught the technique step by step.

Mnemorium

Mnemorium is a free, open-source desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux. You upload photos of spaces you know, place notes and images in a 3D view, and study them with the FSRS-5 spaced-repetition system. Everything stays on your computer, without an account. AI is optional, with your own key for OpenAI, Google Gemini or a local model. Suits students who want palaces from their own rooms and a review schedule, and who work on a computer.

Art of Memory

Art of Memory is a long-standing site about memory techniques: tutorials on memory palaces and other methods, a forum, free memory games and Memory League for training and competitions. Its software page describes memory palace software, but the beta sign-up was closed when we checked. Suits anyone who wants to learn the techniques properly and ask questions.

Sherlock's Memory Palace

Sherlock's Memory Palace (memorypalace.ai, not to be confused with us at thememorypalace.ai) is a web app: you paste a text, it generates memorable images, and you place them along a route you know. The free trial gives 50 credits and up to two palaces; paid plans are $5.99 a week, $9.99 a month or $99 a year. Suits people who memorize poems, speeches, scripture or exam answers.

Mind Palace: Memory Trainer and Palace Walk

Two smaller trainer apps in the stores. Mind Palace: Memory Trainer makes palace backgrounds with AI, pins your study items in them and adds spaced repetition; it is free, with Mind Palace Pro at $3.99 on the US App Store. Palace Walk lets you practise the method of loci with your own palaces and photos, with number and word training; it is free on the App Store, and the Android version contains ads. Suit people who want a small app on their phone for daily practice.

Anki

Anki is not a memory palace app but a flashcard program with spaced repetition: it shows hard cards more often and easy ones less. It is free on Windows, macOS and Linux, AnkiDroid for Android is free, and AnkiMobile for iPhone and iPad is paid. Suits anyone who must keep many separate facts. A palace and Anki work well together: the palace holds the order, the cards hold the details.
