Digitising VHS and MiniDV: equipment, services and costs

See which years your photos cover, no account needed

A shelf of tapes with handwritten labels and nothing left to play them on. This guide covers what you need to digitise VHS and MiniDV yourself, what actually goes wrong, and what services in the UK and US charge.

Last checked: 6 October 2026, on each service's own price page.

The short answer

MiniDV copies without loss over FireWire. VHS, VHS-C, Video8 and Hi8 play on a VCR or camcorder and are recorded with a capture device. For a handful of tapes, a service costs roughly ten to fifteen pounds a tape. Keep an MP4 for watching and keep the originals.

Format and equipment

FormatTo play itTo transfer it
VHSA VCRUSB capture device, via S-Video if possible
VHS-CA VCR with a VHS-C adapterAs VHS
Video8 and Hi8A camcorder for that formatCapture device
MiniDVA MiniDV camcorderFireWire to the computer, without loss

One example capture device: the Hauppauge USB-Live2 has S-Video and composite inputs, records MPEG-2 at 720x576 for PAL and runs on Windows; the maker does not list the Mac.

The honest difficulties

  • A working player. Stand-alone VCRs are no longer made, and second-hand machines have aged heads and belts.
  • Tape condition. Mouldy tapes should not go into your player.
  • Real time. A three-hour tape takes three hours to capture.
  • Unstable pictures. Services correct them with a time-base corrector; consumer devices do not.
  • No FireWire. Modern computers lack the port, and working MiniDV camcorders are getting rare.

Which files to keep, and where

An MP4 in H.264 for watching, a higher-quality copy if offered, and for MiniDV the original DV stream. Keep three copies on two kinds of storage, one outside the house. Store the tapes upright, cool and dry, away from speakers and magnets. Then write down who is on screen and which year, starting each file name with the year. Questions people ask

How do I digitise a VHS tape myself?

You need a working VCR, a USB capture device with an S-Video or composite input, and a computer. S-Video gives a better picture than the yellow composite lead. Clean the heads first, and remember capture runs in real time.

How do I transfer MiniDV tapes to a computer?

MiniDV is already digital. With a camcorder that has a FireWire port (IEEE 1394, i.LINK), you copy the tape without quality loss. Apple says a Mac without FireWire can use a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, and iMovie imports DV and HDV.

How much does it cost to convert VHS to digital in the UK?

On 6 October 2026, MEDIAFIX UK listed £10.99 a tape for up to 3 tapes, down to £5.99 from 51, and Tapes To Digital listed £15 a tape for 1 to 4 tapes, down to £13 from 31, with up to 3 hours per tape included.

Which file format should I ask for?

An MP4 in H.264 for watching and sharing. If offered, also keep a higher-quality preservation copy; Tapes To Digital, for example, supplies an AVI or MOV master on request. A DVD is a playback format, not an archive.

What if a tape is mouldy?

Do not play it: mould can foul the heads and damage other tapes. Send it to a service that cleans tapes first.

How long do video tapes last?

It depends on the tape and how it was stored. The Canadian Conservation Institute gives an average of 10 to 30 years for magnetic tape.
