How the chart is laid out
The person you choose stands on the left. Each step to the right is one generation back, with the father above and the mother below, the classic pedigree layout also known as an Ahnentafel. With five generations that is up to 31 people on one landscape page.
Every box shows the name with the dates and places of birth and death as far as the file has them; in the outer column there is room for the years only. A dashed box marks an ancestor who is not in your file yet: the gaps you could research next.
Printing tips
- Choose landscape in the print window. The chart is made to fill one A4 or US Letter page.
- To get a PDF, choose Save as PDF (or Microsoft Print to PDF) as the printer.
- For a poster, download the SVG: it stays sharp at any size and opens in a browser, Inkscape or Illustrator.
Which person to start from
The page opens with the person who has the most known ancestors in your file, usually the youngest generation. Type any name to start from someone else, for example a grandparent, to reach further back.
Questions people ask
How do I print a family tree from a GEDCOM file?
Choose the file above, pick the person whose ancestors you want to show and four or five generations, then press Print. The chart is drawn in your browser and fits one landscape page.
Can I save the family tree as a PDF?
Yes. Press Print and choose Save as PDF as the printer. You can also download an SVG file, which stays sharp when printed large.
How many generations fit on the chart?
Four or five. Five generations means the person, 2 parents, 4 grandparents, 8 great-grandparents and 16 great-great-grandparents: 31 boxes on one page.
Why are some boxes empty?
A dashed box is an ancestor who is not in your file, or not linked as a parent. Those are the open places in your research.
Can I make a descendant chart instead?
This tool makes ancestor charts only: one person and the generations before them.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The file is read and the chart is drawn in your browser. Nothing leaves your computer or phone, and nothing is stored.
Is it free?
Yes, free and without an account, and the chart carries no watermark, only a small line with the website address.
