Write down a first family story with the free family interview

Every Monday a question would arrive: what was your first job? Your father would happily answer it, but he reads Dutch, or German, or French, and the question comes in English. A year of stories and then a book is a lovely idea. The question is whether it works in his language.

Last checked: 3 October 2026, on the makers' own websites. We make The Memory Palace, a small app made by one person, Bram, in Leuven, Belgium, and it is one of the options below. We describe the others as fairly as we can.

The short answer

Storyworth works in English and Spanish. You can write in any language and the book will be printed in it, but the questions arrive in English or Spanish. For questions in the storyteller's own language there are local services: Astoldby in Dutch, Meminto and Willow Stories in German, Raconteo in French. If the stories do not need to become a book, The Memory Palace keeps them with the photos and the family tree, in five languages.

Storyworth and Remento: what works in other languages

Storyworth says it is offered in English and Spanish. Stories can be written in any language, and printing supports most but not all languages. So the question arrives in English or Spanish, and the answer can be in Dutch, German or French. That can work when a son or daughter translates the questions. For a parent who reads no English, it is a hurdle. Remento, where the storyteller speaks the answers, turns speech into text in English and Spanish only.

Dutch: Astoldby

Astoldby sends a question by email every week for 52 weeks. You can skip questions, change the order and add photos. At the end there is a printed book of up to 400 pages: €79.95 with a soft cover and black and white photos, €99.95 with a hard cover, or €114.95 with a hard cover and colour photos, shipped free to the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

German: Meminto and Willow Stories

Meminto is paid once, €99, €149 or €397. The storyteller answers one question a week or all at once, in writing, by voice or on video, and the A5 hardcover has QR codes to the recordings. Its books exist in German, English, Spanish and Portuguese. Willow Stories works with guided interviews and a digital biography, in German and English, for €299 the first year and €29 a year after that.

French: Raconteo

Raconteo, made in France, has a free plan for up to three stories and an Auteur plan at €89 a year with unlimited stories, a PDF export and one printed book. A biographer service with phone or video interviews starts at €890.

When it does not need to be a book: The Memory Palace

The Memory Palace does not send weekly questions by email and does not print a book. It is a place where the stories sit with everything else: the recording of your father telling how he met your mother, in the same room as their wedding photo, next to the family tree. The whole app works in English, Dutch, German, French and Spanish. Everything is private until you invite someone, data is stored in the EU, and every plan, the free one included, has a full ZIP export.

How to choose

  1. Which language does the storyteller read? A question in a foreign language often goes unanswered.
  2. Writing or talking? Choose for the storyteller, not for yourself.
  3. Book or place? A book on the shelf: Storyworth or a local equivalent. A place the family keeps adding to: The Memory Palace.
  4. Where is the book shipped? Check delivery to your country before you start.
